It’s time for Thyme!  Yesterday, we talked about all of the incredible benefits of Turkey and today we’ll talk about the incredible benefits of Thyme that may just be on that Turkey!  More than 100 varieties of aromatic Thyme exist worldwide and each has a slightly different flavor.  Originating from the Greek word, thymon, the translation literally means “to fumigate.”  That’s an appropriate way to begin learning about this delicious and medicinally-beneficial herb from which thymol is derived.

Ancient Romans used Thyme oil in their baths because they believed that it promoted vigor and would eat it as protection from poison.  Thymol is a powerful antiseptic and is in a class of plant compounds known as “monoterpenes.”  Monoterpenes are essential to LIVING YOUNGER because they fight chronic inflammation and oxidation (the “rust” in our bodies).  These two are basically the evil twins of chronic disease!  Thymol has been researched and found to be a powerful disinfectant even in moldy dwellings.  START SOMEWHERE today enjoying more Thyme and consider these benefits:

  • Thyme is easy to grow year round, either outside or in your kitchen window.  Here’s a link to the Farmer’s Almanac!
  • With an intensely pungent flavor, it is a delicious complement to most meat and can withstand slow cooking or roasting.  Tuck thyme, lemon, and onion inside a turkey or chicken before baking.
  • Currently being researched for its benefit in the treatment of cancer, herpes, infection, colitis, blood clots, and ulcers, Thymol is a hot topic in the scientific world.  We are learning more and more that God has given us everything we need!
  • Thymol can tame coughing fits.  Acute bronchitis often develops a few days after a cold or the flu.  The bronchi pump out mucous in response to the infection causing “coughing fits.”  German researchers studied more than 1200 adolescents and children with acute bronchitis.  The subjects were given a syrup with thyme and ivy (Bronchipret).  After only four days of treatment, the severity of symptoms had decreased by 46 percent, and the coughing fits decreased by 81 percent after 10 days – all with virtually no side effects.

Here is an easy herb blend that you can inexpensively home craft and have ready in your refrigerator.  It’s a rendition of the French classic and can be modified according to your own taste buds or herbs you have on hand.  Fennel, oregano, summer savory, mint, and chervil are also often part of the mix.
