You either love it or hate it!  It may be an acquired taste in any form besides fried!  It’s a staple in seafood gumbo for those who don’t mind the often slimy texture.  At our house, we love it combined with Summer Squash and Onion, all dusted with blue cornmeal and fried in Avocado oil.  Yum! Yum!  Okra is a warm-weather vegetable that grows well in tropical and subtropical areas and has been on the menu for hundreds of years in Africa, South America, and the Middle East and was said to grow along the banks of the Nile River 3,000 years ago.  It’s many uses as medicine surprised me, and it is loaded with vital nutrients.  Okra is more than meets the eye!

Over the centuries, Okra has had many traditional uses including relief of urinary problems and sore throats and treatment of pain, syphilis, and lung inflammation.  Here is some recent information from studies showing how Okra can NOURISH LIFE:

  1. Okra pods possess anti-fatigue activity:  Fatigue is a complex physical and mental phenomena and is defined as “difficulty in initiating or sustaining voluntary activities.”  Although present with many chronic illnesses, fatigue is becoming more common due to frantic pace of modern life.  Research has proven that Okra pods have anti-fatigue activity via their potent polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoids.
  2. Okra could be a natural antidepressant:  It makes a lot of sense!  Have you ever noticed that people with healthy habits tend to be in better moods more often than most?  It could be for many lifestyle reasons but science has proven that plants contain specific natural compounds that contribute to positive mood scores.  Researchers have compared the flavonoids and quercetin content in Okra and the levels are comparable to that of blueberries and blackberries.
  3. Okra is gaining popularity as a superfood for stabilization of blood sugar and as a weapon against Type 2 Diabetes.  High in fiber as well as phytonutrients, Okra helps regulate blood sugar and insulin release by several mechanisms.  Published in Planta Medica, results by Taiwan researchers documented that myricetin, a purified chemical extracted from Okra, greatly increased muscular utilization of glucose, thereby reducing blood sugar levels.  This was a rat study but is a great starting point for human clinical trials.

Okra is more than meets the eye and this post has barely touched the surface.  Even the “Okra slime” is super nutritious!  You’ll have to trust me on that for now!  START SOMEWHERE today eating more real food.  NOURISH LIFE with Okra and reap the many vitality benefits.  You can do it.  I will help you!
