Mix Media creative options are everywhere!

Recently at an evening gathering, some beautiful napkins caught my eye.

I immediately went to Hobby Lobby and found a package of 50 for about $3.00 with my coupon.  Now that’s a bargain! This is a speedy project that I hope you will enjoy.

Here’s what I used:

  • Mix Media Paper (Canson 98 lb, 7 in x 10 in)
  • Gesso (Galeria Acrylic Primer by Winsor & Newton)
  • Gloves (Get a free box from your dentist!)
  • Party Napkins (mine were cocktail size – larger would be better)
  • Matte Medium (Liquitex)
  • Stencil that covers the paper (I’m sorry I don’t know the source of the one I used!)
  • Texture Paste (Platinum Crackle by Finnabair – artExtravagance)
  • Palette Knife

That is a short list of supplies!  This would make gorgeous invitations!  You could get an assembly line going!

Here is the drill:

  1. With gloved hands, smear gesso over the paper.  Let dry completely.
  2. Separate the two layers of the decorative napkin.  It’s tricky to get it started!
  3. Apply matte medium to the gesso and press the napkin into it.  At this point the napkin is extremely fragile and it is easy to tear it.  Don’t let it stress you if you do tear it – it just adds to the beauty.
  4. When this is totally dry, arrange the stencil on it and hold securely.
  5. With palette knife, apply the texture paste carefully.  Once you get some of it down, the stencil will be easier to keep in place.
  6. Lift the stencil carefully and let dry.  The beautiful crackles will quickly start to develop.
  7. Write a note, seal, address, stamp, mail, and smile!  Not only have you decreased your stress level, you have made someone else very happy when they find this in their mailbox.
